, we believe that learning doesn’t stop when children leave the classroom.

Golden Gate Park is one of the most iconic outdoor spaces in the city. It’s the largest urban park in San Francisco and is among the most-visited parks in the United States. You might be surprised to find that it offers far more than just open grass and playgrounds! Families can explore gardens, lakes, and walking paths while giving children plenty of room to move and play. Attractions such as the Japanese Tea Garden, the San Francisco Botanical Garden, and the Conservatory of Flowers offer a variety of experiences, all in the same destination.

For preschool-aged children, the park provides a natural extension of classroom learning. Observing plants, watching wildlife, and engaging in imaginative play all support early cognitive and social development. The Koret Children’s Quarter, in particular, is a favorite for its expansive playground designed with younger children in mind.

A visit to the San Francisco Zoo offers an exciting opportunity for children to learn about animals and habitats. For preschoolers, seeing animals up close can spark curiosity and build an early awareness of science.

This interactive space focuses on art, innovation, and imagination, which are key elements of early childhood education.

           San Francisco

has introduced a major expansion of its childcare subsidy program aimed at making preschool and daycare more affordable for families. The initiative, part of the city’s Family Opportunity Agenda, significantly broadens access to free or reduced-cost childcare for families with young children.

For many parents, especially those with children in preschool or daycare, the new policy could dramatically reduce childcare costs and improve access to early education. Below is a closer look at how the plan works and what it means for families.

Why San Francisco Expanded Childcare Subsidies

Childcare is one of the largest expenses for families in San Francisco—often second only to housing. In many cases, families pay $20,000 to $30,000 per year per child for care, making it difficult for parents to stay in the city.

City leaders introduced the expanded subsidy plan to help address this affordability crisis and encourage more families to remain in San Francisco. The program aims to reduce childcare costs by thousands of dollars annually while expanding access to quality early childhood education.

Key Features of the New Childcare Subsidy Plan

The updated policy dramatically increases income eligibility and expands the number of families who can qualify for assistance.

           Free Childcare for Many Families

Under the new plan, families earning up to $230,000 per year (about 150% of the area median income) can qualify for free childcare for children under age five. For many households, this means little to no out-of-pocket childcare costs.

           This includes services such as:

           Partial Subsidies for Higher-Income Families

Families earning between $230,000 and $310,000 annually (up to 200% of the area median income) can receive a 50% childcare subsidy.

This expansion is notable because previous programs mainly targeted low-income families. The new structure specifically supports middle-income households, who often struggle with high childcare costs despite earning higher salaries.

The new program significantly increases eligibility compared to earlier childcare assistance programs.

           For example:

Earlier programs offered free care mainly to families earning 110% of the area median income or less.

The new expansion raises eligibility to 150% for free care and 200% for partial subsidies.

Because of these changes, about two-thirds of San Francisco families may now qualify for free or reduced childcare.

With childcare costs reaching tens of thousands of dollars annually, subsidies could save families significant money each year.

For many households, this may allow parents to:

           Increased Access to Early Education

High-quality early education has been shown to support cognitive, social, and emotional development in young children.

By reducing childcare costs, the city hopes more families will enroll their children in preschool and daycare programs that help prepare them for kindergarten.

The subsidy program can be used at more than 500 licensed childcare providers across the city, including daycare centers and family childcare homes.

San Francisco’s expanded childcare subsidy plan represents one of the most ambitious efforts in the United States to address childcare affordability. By offering free childcare for many families and partial subsidies for others, the city hopes to make preschool and daycare more accessible while helping families manage the high cost of living.

How to Prepare Your Child for Their First Day of Daycare

The first day of daycare is an exciting milestone, but it can also bring big emotions for both children and parents. At Alpha Kids Academy, we work closely with families in the San Francisco, Novato, and Menlo Park, CA areas to help make this transition as smooth and positive as possible. With a little preparation, your child can begin their daycare journey feeling confident, secure, and ready to learn.

Talk About Daycare Ahead of Time

Children feel more comfortable when they know what to expect. Start talking about daycare several days or weeks in advance. Describe it as a safe, fun place where they will play, learn, and make new friends. Use positive language when discussing preschool and childcare so your child associates the experience with excitement rather than anxiety.

Reading books about daycare or role-playing drop-off routines can also help younger children understand what the day will look like.

           Establish a Consistent Routine

A predictable routine helps children feel secure, especially when they are very young. Before daycare begins, adjust bedtime and morning schedules to match what your child will follow during the week. Consistent wake-up times, meals, and naps can reduce stress and make mornings easier once daycare starts.

This structure supports healthy transitions and prepares your child for a preschool environment where routines play an important role in learning and development.

           Encourage Independence at Home

Simple skills like putting on shoes, washing hands, or cleaning up toys can boost your child’s confidence at daycare. Practicing these habits at home helps children feel capable and comfortable in a childcare setting.

Independence also supports smoother classroom transitions and helps children feel proud of their growing abilities.

           Visit the Daycare Together

If possible, visit the daycare with your child before their first official day. Seeing the classroom, meeting teachers, and exploring the space can reduce fear of the unknown. Familiar surroundings make it easier for children to separate from parents on their first day.

At Alpha Kids Academy, we believe that strong relationships between families, children, and teachers are key to a successful daycare experience.

           Keep Goodbyes Calm and Positive

On the first day, keep drop-offs brief and reassuring. Let your child know when you will return and follow through on your promise. A calm, confident goodbye helps your child feel safe and supported.

Even if there are a few tears, most children adjust quickly once they become engaged in activities and connect with our caregivers.

           Trust the Process

It’s normal for children to need time to adjust to daycare. With patience, consistency, and encouragement, most children thrive in a nurturing preschool environment. Quality childcare supports social development, early learning, and emotional growth during these important early years.

Separation Anxiety at Preschool Drop-Off: What Parents Can Do

Preschool drop-off can be an emotional time for both you and your child. Those tearful goodbyes and clinging hugs are a normal part of development as young children learn to navigate new environments and temporary separations from their parents. As educators and caregivers serving families across the San Francisco Bay Area, we've supported countless parents through this transition. We know it can be challenging, but with patience and the right strategies, drop-offs can become a smooth and positive part of your daily routine.

This is a common experience called separation anxiety, and it’s a sign of the healthy, loving bond you share with your child. Understanding the reasons behind these feelings and having a plan can make all the difference.

Separation anxiety in preschoolers is a completely normal developmental stage. Your child is beginning to understand object permanence, the idea that people and things exist even when they can't be seen. At the same time, they don't have a strong concept of time, so a few hours at preschool can feel like an eternity. For many children in the Bay Area, preschool is their first big step into a world outside the family home, and that can feel both exciting and a little scary.

At Alpha Kids Academy, we recognize that every child adapts at their own pace. Our approach is built on creating a warm, safe, and nurturing atmosphere where your child feels secure from the moment they arrive.

           Strategies for Smoother Goodbyes

We've seen that a few consistent practices can significantly ease the anxiety of drop-off for both children and parents. Here are some tips that we have found to be effective for families at our centers.

           Establish a Consistent Drop-Off Ritual

Children thrive on predictability. Creating a short, sweet, and consistent goodbye routine can provide a sense of security. This could be a special handshake, a quick hug and a kiss, followed by a cheerful "I'll see you after snack time!" The key is to make it the same every day. This ritual signals to your child that the separation is temporary and that you will be back. Avoid lingering, as this can often prolong the distress and make the separation harder.

           Talk Positively About Preschool

In the days and hours leading up to school, talk about all the fun things your child will do. You might say, "I can't wait to hear what songs you sing with your friends today!" or "Maybe you'll build a tall tower in the block corner!" This helps frame preschool as an exciting and enjoyable place. At our schools, we offer a rich curriculum that includes music, science, and sports, giving you plenty of specific, fun activities to mention. Our language immersion programs in Spanish (Menlo Park) and Mandarin (Stonecrest) also provide unique experiences you can highlight.

           Acknowledge Their Feelings

It’s important to validate your child's emotions without amplifying them. You can say something like, "I know you feel sad when I leave, and it's okay to miss me. I will miss you too! Your teachers will take great care of you, and we will have a big hug when I pick you up." This shows them that you understand their feelings, but it also reinforces that they are safe and capable of handling the separation. Our teachers are skilled at comforting children and gently redirecting their attention to an engaging activity once you have left.

Keep Your Own Emotions in Check

Your child is highly attuned to your feelings. If you appear anxious or sad, they will pick up on it, which can heighten their own anxiety. Even if you're feeling a little emotional yourself, project confidence and calmness. A warm smile and a positive attitude show your child that you are comfortable with the situation and trust the environment you are leaving them in.

How We Help at Alpha Kids Academy

Creating a supportive and secure environment is at the heart of everything we do. We understand the importance of the home-school connection, especially during these early years.

Our low teacher-to-student ratio is a key part of our philosophy. It allows our educators to provide individualized attention and build strong, trusting relationships with each child. When your child has a special bond with their teacher, they feel more secure and comfortable in the classroom, making separations from you easier over time. We work with families to make potty training a supportive process, and we welcome children at all stages of this journey.

We believe in partnering with parents. Our teachers keep open lines of communication so you feel connected throughout the day. We are here to support you and your child, offering updates and working together to find strategies that work best for your family. This collaborative approach helps build a bridge of trust between home and school.

When summer arrives, parents often search for engaging activities to keep their children entertained while also fostering their growth and development. For young learners, particularly those in preschool, childcare, or daycare, summertime presents a unique opportunity to explore the world of STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math - through fun, hands-on experiences. Whether you're in San Francisco, CA, Novato, CA, or Menlo Park, CA, summer offers endless possibilities for nurturing curiosity and foundational STEM skills.

Why Focus on STEM in Early Childhood?

Research shows that early exposure to STEM activities can enhance problem-solving skills, boost creativity, and build confidence in young learners. More importantly, early STEM educations lays the foundation for future academic success by fostering curiosity and a love for discovery. By integrating STEM concepts into play, children can begin developing these skills naturally while having fun.

Summer Activities to Build STEM Skills

Summer provides countless opportunities to weave STEM learning into everyday fun. Here are some excellent activity ideas to explore - many of which parents can easily implement at home or while attending one of Alpha Kids Academy's specialized programs:

           1. Fun with Water Science

On a hot summer day, few things excite kids more than water play. Turn this enthusiasm into a science lesson by experimenting with floating and sinking objects. Gather items like toy boats, sponges, and rocks, and ask your child to predict what will float or sink before testing.

            2. Backyard Engineering

Transform your backyard into a mini engineering workshop with building challenges. Give your child household items like popsicle sticks, cups, and tape, and encourage them to construct a bridge that can hold weight or a tower that stands tall.

           3. Nature Math Treasure Hunt

Connect basic math concepts to the natural world by taking your child outside for a math-focused nature scavenger hunt. Ask them to find and count objects like leaves, flowers, or sticks. For older preschoolers, introduce simple addition and subtraction by combining or separating their collected items.

           4. Kitchen Chemistry

Cooking and baking are excellent ways to explore basic chemistry concepts. Making homemade ice cream, for example, introduces kids to the process of freezing and temperature changes. Meanwhile, baking cookies demonstrates how different ingredients interact to create chemical reactions. Kitchen activities will teach your child to measure ingredients and make predictions about what will happen when items are mixed together. Our hands-on activities at Alpha Kids Academy help make STEM concepts more approachable and exciting.

One of the simplest ways to introduce kids to the natural wonders around them is to simply grab a blanket on a summer night and head outside to spend some time identifying constellations or observing the moon. Pair the activity with a simple craft, like creating star patterns with glow-in-the-dark stickers.

What to Look for in a Preschool: A San Francisco Parent's Checklist

Choosing the right preschool for your child is an important decision that can impact their future success. With numerous options available throughout San Francisco, CA, understanding what to prioritize can feel overwhelming. This comprehensive guide will help you navigate the selection process with confidence, ensuring your child receives the quality early childhood education they deserve.

           Understanding Your Child's Needs

Before evaluating specific programs, consider your child's individual personality, learning style, and developmental stage. Some children thrive in structured environments with clear routines, while others benefit from more flexible, play-based approaches. Observe how your child interacts with peers, responds to new situations, and engages with learning activities at home.

The most effective preschool programs recognize that children develop at different rates and offer individualized support. Look for schools that assess each child's strengths and areas for growth, then adapt their teaching methods accordingly.

           Curriculum and Educational Philosophy

A quality preschool curriculum should address all domains of child development: cognitive, social-emotional, physical, and language skills. The program should incorporate literacy, mathematics, science, and creative arts in age-appropriate ways that make learning engaging and meaningful.

Our San Francisco preschool offers specialized programs that incorporate language immersion techniques, STEM-focused curricula, and arts-integrated learning. Consider whether these specialized approaches align with your family's values and your child's interests. However, remember that a well-rounded foundation often proves more valuable than early specialization.

Look for programs that emphasize hands-on learning through play, exploration, and discovery. Children learn best when they can manipulate materials, conduct simple experiments, and engage in imaginative play. The curriculum should balance teacher-directed activities with child-initiated exploration time.

           Teacher Qualifications and Classroom Environment

The quality of teaching staff significantly impacts your child's preschool experience. Seek programs where teachers hold relevant early childhood education credentials and participate in ongoing professional development. Experienced educators understand child development milestones and can recognize when children need additional support or enrichment.

           Health, Safety, and Communication Protocols

Verify that the preschool maintains current licenses and certifications required by California state regulations. Review their health and safety policies, including procedures for illness, emergency situations, and visitor access. The facility should conduct regular safety drills and maintain secure entry systems.

Inquire about the school's communication practices with families. Regular updates about your child's progress, daily activities, and upcoming events help maintain strong home-school connections. Many programs use digital platforms to share photos, developmental observations, and important announcements.

           Social and Emotional Development Support

Preschool serves as many children's first experience with peer relationships and group dynamics. Look for programs that explicitly teach social skills such as sharing, cooperation, and conflict resolution. Children should learn to express emotions appropriately and develop empathy for others.

The program should support children's growing independence while providing appropriate guidance and structure. This includes opportunities for children to make choices, solve problems, and take responsibility for their belongings and actions.

Practical Considerations for San Francisco Families

When living in the San Francisco, CA area, it’s important to consider logistical factors that will impact your family's daily routine. Evaluate the school's location relative to your home or workplace, available transportation options, and parking accessibility. San Francisco's unique geography and traffic patterns make location particularly important.

Review the program's schedule options, including full-day versus part-day programs, extended care availability, and vacation policies. Some families need flexible scheduling to accommodate work demands, while others prefer consistent daily routines.

Understand the fee structure, including tuition, registration costs, and additional expenses for supplies, meals, or field trips. Many San Francisco preschools offer sliding scale tuition or accept state subsidies for qualifying families.

           5 Must-Have Items for
Your Child’s First Day at Preschool

Starting preschool is an exciting milestone for both you and your child. To ensure a smooth and comfortable transition, it’s essential to be prepared with the right items. Packing a few essentials can help your little one feel more at ease and ready to embrace their new adventure. Here are five must-have items for your child’s first day at preschool:

           A Durable Backpack –

A lightweight, child-sized backpack is a practical necessity. It should be big enough to carry all their essentials—like snacks, a water bottle, and extra clothes—while still being easy for small hands to manage. Look for a backpack with adjustable straps and a fun design your child will love, as it can help build excitement for their big day.

           Comfortable Change of Clothes –

Accidents and spills are inevitable, so pack a full change of clothes, including socks and underwear. Choose comfortable, easy-to-wear items that your child can manage independently, like elastic-waist pants or slip-on shoes. Store them in a labeled, resealable bag to keep everything organized and clean.

           Personalized Water Bottle –

Staying hydrated is important for active preschoolers. Send your child with a sturdy, spill-proof water bottle labeled with their name. Choose one that’s easy to open and close so your child can drink without assistance. Many preschools encourage kids to bring their own water bottles to minimize the use of disposable cups.

           Nutritious Snacks or Lunch –

If your preschool allows packed snacks or lunches, make sure to include healthy, kid-friendly options. Cut-up fruits, veggie sticks, cheese cubes, and whole-grain crackers are great choices. Use containers that are easy for your child to open and close independently. Don’t forget to check the school’s policy on allergies to ensure your snacks are appropriate.

           A Comfort Item –

The first day can be overwhelming, so pack a small comfort item like a favorite stuffed animal, a blanket, or even a family photo. Having a familiar object can help ease separation anxiety and make your child feel more secure in a new environment.

How and When to Introduce Solids to Infants

First, it is important to inform the daycare center you send your child to when you have started to introduce solids. The reason this is important is so that the daycare workers can be on the lookout for any reactions, know what you are currently feeding the child, and be in the loop of any foods your child has already reacted negatively to. Here are a few things to look for as you decide whether your child is ready to start solids.

            Can Hold Their Head Up:

A baby’s ability to hold their head up is especially important to ensure the baby does not choke while eating solids. It is common for babies to gag when they eat solids, just be sure that they are not choking and never leave them unattended while they eat.

Can Sit with Little or No Support:

Like adults, babies need to be able to sit to eat. A baby can typically begin sitting up with little or no support between 4 and 6 months old. Daycare staff can also help you with deciding if your baby is ready for solids based on how they are doing during playtime at school.

Can Bring Hands and Toys to Their Mouth:

This is a common thing that babies do when they are handed anything around 4 to 6 months old. Starting to feed a baby little puffs or other dissolvable finger foods will also help with fine motor skill development.

Leans Towards Food and Opens Mouth:

Something that is easy to overlook as you are determining whether to introduce solids to your baby is, does your baby show interest in eating solids. Signs that your child is ready for solids include leaning

           How to Introduce Solids

There is no perfect way to introduce solids to your baby, but it is important to make sure your daycare providers are on the same page as you. Typically, a good place to start is baby oatmeal, especially if a baby is struggling with low iron. Baby oatmeal can be easily prepared by just adding breastmilk, formula, or water until it is very thin. Do not be alarmed if your baby gags the first time they have oatmeal. Depending on whether your child attends daycare, you may have a few extra things to consider. If your daycare center provides meals, you should coordinate what fruits, vegetables, and major allergens you introduce to your baby first. There is no order you must follow, but doctors suggest waiting 5 to 7 days before introducing a new food, so you know if your baby reacts negatively or is allergic to a particular food.

Tips on How to Prepare Your Child for Preschool

The start of your child’s academic journey is an exciting milestone in their life. Preschool is an opportunity for your child to get a head start on their academics, build friendships, and learn valuable life skills. It is also a scary time because it is unfamiliar to your child. Here are some tips on how to prepare your child for preschool and ease the transition:

            1. Familiarize Your Child with the Preschool Routine:

Begin introducing the concept of a daily routine to them. Establish consistent mealtimes, nap times, and play times at home so that they are used to the same conditions that they can expect at preschool. You can also discuss and act out activities with them that they may encounter such as art activities, outdoor play, and sitting in circles. Kids love videos too. So, you may consider watching videos about the average day at preschool.

            2. Visit the Preschool Together:

Anxiety arises from being in unfamiliar situations and places. Take the time to tour the school with your child. Take them to meet the teachers and explore the school. Encourage them to ask questions and express any concerns that they may have.

            3. Foster Independence:

Preschool is usually the first opportunity that children get to start becoming independent. Encourage your child to do things for themselves at home such as brushing their teeth, getting dressed, and cleaning up after playtime. This will build their confidence and help them feel comfortable in the classroom.

            4. Develop Social Skills:

Preschool is a place where your child will begin to learn important lifelong social skills. They will learn how to share, be polite to others, and resolve conflicts. These skills can be frustrating for children to develop at first. Consider planning playdates with other children to help them begin developing their social skills and learn to resolve conflicts constructively.

            5. Read Books about Preschool:

Books are a great way for children to learn. Take some time to read books about starting preschool with your child. Look for books that discuss separation anxiety, making friends, and the excitement of learning. Reading with your child will help them know what to expect, allow you to bond, and foster open communication.

           6. Communicate with the Preschool Staff:

Establish open lines of communication with the preschool staff. Share any relevant information about your child's interests, strengths, and any concerns you may have. Collaborate with the teachers to create a smooth transition plan that takes into account your child's individual needs and preferences.

           7. Stay Positive and Reassuring:

Your attitude towards preschool will greatly influence your child's perception of this new experience. Stay positive and reassuring, emphasizing the fun and exciting aspects of preschool. Remind your child that you will always be there to support them and that preschool is a safe and nurturing environment.

Children grow up quickly and the age where they can begin attending preschool arrives sooner than many parents expect. Then, they must ask themselves whether they want to transfer their child from daycare to a preschool program. Some parents worry about sending their three or four-year-old child to preschool because of how young they still are, but not to worry! Preschool programs provide multiple benefits for you and your child, including:

           · Nurtures Social and Emotional Development:

In the early years, kids learn a lot of various skills and information about themselves and others. As they play with other kids and learn more about how to communicate and interact with one another, they develop strong social development skills. Preschool also helps to nurture healthy emotional development as kids learn how to share, communicate their needs to other people aside from their parents, and more!

           · Prepare Your Child for Kindergarten:

Preschool is a helpful transition period between daycare and kindergarten because it can ease them into the structure of a standard school day. This is also helpful for parents to reaccustom themselves with not having their child at home all the time.

            · Teaches Your Child How to Follow Instructions:

Following direction and listening attentively are two skills that are crucial to learn early on in life, and preschool helps to start the learning process.

            · Encourage Curiosity and Build Their Imagination:

Creativity stems from nurturing a child’s curious nature and imagination, which preschool is a safe environment for your child to learn. Arts and crafts help to define their fine motor skills.

            · Physical Development:

Being able to play outdoors and with other children helps to foster your child’s physical development and strength, as well as their motor skills through running, jumping, and other activities.

            · Encourages Children to Make Choices and Care for Themselves:

Although children are in a safe environment while attending preschool, they can make small choices that encourages a sense of independence and individuality, which can help boost their self-esteem and confidence as they grow up.

Summer Activities and Reading for Kids in Preschool

You Can Help Your Kids Stay Engaged During Breaks from School

If you’re like me, summer can be hard. Yes, we get to spend more time with our kids when they are out of school. But, we have even more responsibility to be proactive in their education.

One of the things I try to teach my children about, is the world around us. For this, I turn to local/national print publications, podcasts, and kids news .com sites like

           spacescoop.org

           .

Each forum can help kids develop a range of skills, from critical thinking to media literacy, to empathy.

Each story they read (or I read to them) they have the opportunity to discuss people from different backgrounds, cultures, and situations. Thus promoting respect, compassion, and tolerance.

News stories can also be linked to various subjects in their preschool curriculum, such as history, geography, science, and social studies. This connection helps children see the relevance of their studies and the real-world application of their knowledge.

Being a parent comes with a lot of responsibility. You have a child or children that you must always take care of. You are responsible for keeping them safe, fed, educated, and healthy. To be able to do that, you have other obligations and responsibilities that may make it difficult to impossible for you to always keep an eye on your child. Thankfully, childcare is an option for ensuring that your child is always looked after. There are many benefits of daycare services other than simply knowing that your child is safe. The benefits include:

Social Interaction: Developing social skills and emotional intelligence is crucial for success in life. The sooner children get to interact with others and develop these life skills, the more success in life they will have. Beyond that, humans are social creatures who have an innate need for community and connection with others. We crave and desire interaction with others. Your child desires interaction and our daycare gives them the interaction they crave.

Early Education: We plan out daily and weekly lessons that help them grow their critical thinking, math, reading, and problem-solving skills. Studies also show that children who attend daycare exhibit stronger skills in math and reading, which helps them achieve academic success later in life.

Fun, Engaging Learning: Our lessons are not only great for covering all academic areas and building crucial skills for success, but they are also fun. Children do not even realize that they are learning. They think they are simply enjoying a game or other fun activity that keeps them engaged and learning.

Flexibility: Many parents work part-time or full time to support their families, childcare at Alpha Kids Academy provides parents with the support and flexibility they need for their daily routines.

           Healthy Snack Ideas for Children

Proper nutrition for our children is vital to their growth and overall health. Children are active and always burn a lot of energy. That means they constantly need food to fuel themselves and their growth. There are many snacks you can feed your children to keep them happy and healthy, but not all snacks are created equal. Here are some snack ideas to consider for your children:

           · Yogurt: Yogurt is an excellent source of calcium and protein. Calcium is important in the bone growth of children. You can buy yogurt with fruit in it or plain fruit and put in fresh fruit. This adds to the nutritional benefits of yogurt.

           · Celery with Peanut Butter: Cut celery into sticks and spread peanut butter along the inside of the celery stalk. It is an excellent source of protein and carbs.

           · Cheese: Cheese is mostly protein and fat. Dairy products can improve your child’s overall diet quality. Full-fat dairy is a great source of calcium, magnesium, vitamin A, and vitamin D.

           · Fruit: During adolescence, children are much more open to eating new foods including fruits. You can introduce new fruits to them regularly and figure out which ones they like. Fruits can be a good source of fiber, potassium, and vitamin A.

            · Trail Mix: Trail mix is a mixture of nuts, dried fruit, and chocolate candies. This is a great snack for children who are not allergic to nuts.

           · Oatmeal: This is a healthy breakfast snack. Oats are high in fiber and great for digestive health. There are also endless oatmeal flavor options which makes it easy to find a flavor your children will enjoy.

Infants, Toddlers, Little Tikes. They All Cry

If you’re a mom, like me. The slightest cry even in a crowded restaurant gets your attention. For most kids crying is normal. I try to remind myself that every time my 2-year-old cries. He’s still trying to figure out the best way to communicate. But each kid cries for different reasons. Today we are going to discuss and recognize those reasons, and how we can help our children when they cry.

           Seven Reasons Why Kids Cry:

            1) I’m Tired (the over exhausted

After a long day of playing and running around, it’s common to hear “I’m tired”. Our body routinely releases adrenaline and cortisol to help kids keep up with those grueling ninja kicks and wind sprints

What can we do to help?

At this point it’s safe to say your child needs a nap or perhaps a rest. Or perhaps it’s time to start the dreaded “wind down,” where a child gets ready for bed. I typically do the three B’s. A bath, a brushing of the teeth and a few books before bed. This helps my child understand what’s coming next or what they can expect next (like falling asleep).

            2) I’m in Pain (help me!):

Well, we all undoubtedly understand this reaction. No one likes to be in pain, even adults like my husband still cry out for help, when he stubs his pinky toe. Ariana Anderson a PhD professor at UCLA even suggests, that we as parents can recognize a cry for help or even discern this cry over any other cry. A baby’s cry for help “tends to be louder and more intense with fewer breaths,” as opposed to a lower toned cry with short bursts.

What can we do to help?

Often affective is the simplest solution, a hug. A kiss on the wound or even just a rub on the back. Physical touch can release oxytocin — a powerful natural pain reliever. A cold compress can also aid and comfort your little one, when the wound is swollen or red.

            3) I’m Overwhelmed (I am uncomfortable):

Children can be overwhelmed with may differently types of events. A visit to the doctor’s office, a birthday party with loud noises, a new daycare.

           In

fact ten to thirty percent of people are more sensitive to sound, lights and commotion. Just because your child has this sensitivity and cries out, that doesn’t mean they have a “sensory disorder” says Jadzia Jagiellowicz, Ph.D. It just means they have a “natural difference in biology and personality."

What can we do to help?

Instead of quelling your kids’ tears, remind yourself that crying can be beneficial. Help them identify those feelings and fears. Acknowledging them, “You’re really upset, I’m here, I can help you.”

            4) I’m Hungry:

This one I deal with most often. Is it just me or do kids never eat their food when it’s right in front of them? A full melt down usually follows, and in seconds my boy is screaming for food.

What can we do to help?

Remember kids generally eat every three to four hours. That’s three meals and at least two snacks a day, according to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Without the proper fuel and nutrition, a child can struggle with thinking, learning and even processing emotional behaviors. I typically pack power bars, gold fish and fruit for those on-the-go moments. And when dinner is delayed, even though accidental, I try to serve them something that’s easy. Fast to prepare, something that I know they will eat, like chicken noodle soup. Also, don’t be hesitant to offer your kids a snacks before meal time, you don’t want the situation to escalate or increase their frustration.

            5) I’m Scared:

Being afraid is normal. According to a North Western University Study, that they did on understanding fear, “Fear is our survival response.” The moment your body recognizes fear “your amygdala organ goes to work” alerting your entire body. Even changing blood flow away from your heart, making it easier to run away or even throw punches. Remember, around three a child’s imagination blossoms, inducing fears that seem irrational like the boogie man hiding in the dark.

What can we do to help?

Empathize and tell your little one that their fear is reasonable. Explain that you can help minimize their fear and encourage them to face their fear; of course, with your help and protection.

           6) I’m Mad at You:

I’ve heard this one before. When a toddler or preschooler yells and cries, it’s often out of frustration. Their rage, a direct correlation that someone has blocked their path or they didn’t get what they want. Even some adults cry when they are frustrated. Don’t expect a child who’s under the age of nine to master their emotional control any time soon.

What can we do to help?

Share your own frustrations, it’s okay to say “I’m mad, or I’m upset.” Help your kids recognize their own emotions and have empathy when they voice theirs. Often, they just want to be heard and typically if you knowledge their emotions that should quall their tears.

           7) They Feel Guilty

           :

Around age three toddlers start to recognize that they hurt someone or that they have done something wrong. Crying is a true sign or remorse so acknowledge it.

What can we do to help?

I like to teach my boys to make amends, so they can move past being upset. That often stops the tears. It’s hard to talk it out when their crying. Tell them to take a deep breathe, this will allow them the ability to rest, and for them to tell you what happened. You can also ask them for solutions. How can we make the other person you hurt feel better?

After three years of COVID, we like you never thought this day would come — prepping for back to school. If you’re grappling with how best to transition your baby from being at home to being in their new daycare, you’re not alone. Here are some tips and products that keep this transition stress-free (and germ-free!) as possible.

Most childcare providers will provide you with a list of what they will and will not provide. Make sure you ask for an outline of what they expect you to provide but here are the basics:

Things to Pack Daily in their Diaper Bag:

            Bottles

             – Depending on how old your baby is you will want to pack a bottle for about every 3 hours. This can be frozen breast milk or baby formula.

I typically sent 4 bottles with my son just in case. Most days he only took 3. All bottles need to be labeled with baby’s name, date and preparation notes.

            Baby Food

             – Depending on how old your baby is, you will likely need to provide infant cereal and baby food daily. We do try to provide snacks if baby needs them, but we find parents packing their own lunches is best to avoid allergy's.

If you label each jar or container with your baby’s name, date, and time of day, our care givers try their best to make sure your infant gets feed the right food at the right time of day.

            Additional Snacks

             – Talk to your provider about their policy on this but you may want to send some additional snack for your baby. Maybe sliced fruit, cheerios, or a teething biscuit. Make sure you give strict instructions on when to offer these so not to interfere with normal feeds. You will need to label any snacks with your baby’s name and date.

            Bibs

              &

            Burp Cloths

            – If you have ever used a baby bib before then you know how gross they get after one feeding. Make sure to provide one for each feeding. Take them home daily and provide fresh ones the next day. Each bib/cloth needs to be labeled with your baby’s name. Send a few extra if your baby has a spit-up problem.

            Pacifier or Lovey

             – If your baby takes a paci or has a favorite “lovey” (blanket, toy, etc), send it daily and bring it home daily to clean. Again, have it labeled with you baby’s name on it, if possible.

To clean their favorite toy or object each day consider a Nursery Sanitizer. Here's one that seems ideal for larger objects (

             – If you are starting your baby on a sippy cup, I recommend sending 2 with them daily. They will need to be labeled of course, as they get older just one bottle for water will suffice.

              – Some child care providers will allow you to provide a crib sheet and or blanket depending on age. At Alpha Kids we provide crib sheets but recommend that parent(s) pack a blanket for nap time and wash it each week upon their return.

I sent new sheets and a blanket on Mondays and took them home Fridays to wash; so they stayed there all week. You will need to label all sheets and blankets with your child’s name or label the bag in which you drop them off in. A simple duffle or

             – Typically you will send a pack or two of diapers at a time and your provider will notify you when you are running low. Some daycares provide diapers, some providers may want you to send diapers daily and not keep them on site so be sure you clarify. You can simply write your child’s name on the package of diapers.

             – Just like with diapers, send a container of wipes. It will be labeled with your baby’s name and refilled as needed. Some Infant care facilities provide wipes, make sure to ask.

            Extra Clothes

             – This is a must as any parent of a baby knows. Depending on how messy your child might be, plan to provide at least 3 changes of clothes and extra shoes if need be. I typically took the extra clothes home every few weeks to switch them out and wash. At Alpha Kids we will give you any soiled clothes when you pick your child up and you just bring a replacement in the next day to replenish your kid's stash. You will need to label all clothes, jackets, shoes. A simple sharpie to the tag will do but they also sell clothing labels that work well too.

           Prescription Medication

Any medicine your baby requires should be properly labeled and instructions should be given. Not only dosage but also frequency too. Don't forget to mention if it needs refrigeration.

This seems like a lot but if you can master these things the transition will get easier. As the child ages, the amount of stuff you need to provide daily or weekly will diminish, and so will any apprehension.

How Can We Encourage Good Behavior at Preschool

As parents we have the hardest job. Guiding our young kids, teaching them how to socialize safely then correcting their bad behavior when things go wrong . In my experience this was all hard to do prior to covid, but now as we enter what they call the never ending "covid endemic phase," the task feels even more daunting.

Children are no longer able to read your facial cues. They socialize less with kids their own age. Making it harder for children to understand what's appropriate and what's not appropriate behavior.

So how do we elicit the behavior we want? Or at least encourage it?

Simply put, children quickly learn how to behave when we give consistent and positive guidance. This is something we can easily practice at home, before we drop them off at school.

ProActive Strategies:

In my experience it's best to put activities they do not prefer first, followed by something they really enjoy.

Target only 1-2 behaviors at a time until you see change or success

Reinforce the behavior you want to see.

Choose the most challenging behaviors first

Reward positive behavior immediately! Don't wait.

Create or buy a positive behavior chart (Amazon Chart Example)

Decide on the reward together (ie. Candy, a new toy, cartoon time.)

Use it right way when you see positive behavior

Make the experience fun; our brains are conditioned to learn more when they are relaxed and not overly stressed.

or daycare for the first time is a big transition and It's completely normal for your children to express fear. In this context children sometimes lack the emotional resources to express their feelings; so they cry. When going through this transition children need time to become accustomed to their surroundings. Or realize there is a new routine in place. It will take some time for them to realize that their caregiver will come back for them. at the end of the day. Keep in mind your child's age or emotional development level may also impact the time they need to transition. Children between the ages of seven months to two years old are typically understanding about this transition, but grudgingly.

Leaving your loved one at daycare can conjure up many emotions for parents. Parents often report the feeling of grief, fear or sadness, due to the stress or change in routine. Fear can also be triggered by past experiences of separation. It's important to acknowledge the discomfort and prepare for the possibility that it may take longer than expected for the transition or discomfort to go away. Consider taking time off work, scheduling me time, visiting/touring the center, or even volunteering (if permitted).

? Getting a toddler to open up can be tough. Although, following these easy tips can make it less awkward.

            Don't Expect Too Much:

Often the child that screams and clings feigns complete disinterest at the end of the day. Don't take it personally, at that age toddlers have trouble transitioning between activities and places. Make pick up just the same as drop off, cheerful, brisk and loving. You may want to even echo the same words you used at drop off "Good Morning, Good Afternoon, Let's wave goodbye" - before you whisk them away to the car.

Try Not To Over Do It:

Fight your first impulse to hug and squeeze your little one. I know you missed them, we always do. Although being too aggressive can be overwhelming. Like grown-ups they need time to unwind and decompress. Unless your kids are the type that always needs that extra hug and affection, give them some space.

            Once you're home from

           Offer A Snack:

or daycare. So offer your toddler a snack and some juice. This will give you the opportunity to sit down with them and gently ask how their day went.

Getting your toddler to open up:

Some kiddos will tell you just about everything; what went down the moment you left, most of it will be hard to understand or even disjointed at times. Others struggle to open up, almost giving you the impression that they did nothing, ate nothing and didn't enjoy themselves. If you're overly concerned we suggest you ask the teachers or program director.

If not, try one of these clever tricks:

Don't ask what they did- ask for specifics.

What did your friend (Sam) say today? What did the teacher read today? What was the snack of the day? Did you enjoy it?

            Ask in extremes.

What was the worst part of your day? What's the BEST thing you saw or did today? Who was nice to you today? This allows the kiddos to conjure up details and practice using their adjectives.

            Get things wrong on purpose.

If you know they usually sing ABCD and or something else, mix up the words when you sing it back to them. Your toddler won't be able to resist correcting you. You can even try something a bit nutty, asking something like, "did you eat glue today?" "What no mom, we ate goldfish."

             Respect their space and boundaries.

Seems like a huge ask, although starting

or daycare for the first time is your toddler's first big venture into the world. School is a place where instead of me and mommy time, it's just them and a bunch of their peers. Forging their identity for the very first time. Extending them some privacy and spaces shows respect and support. Allowing them to blossom and adjust to
